Paul Cézanne The Mont Sainte-Victoire and Large Pine (c. 1887)

It is very remarkable
that in his letter to Emile Zola dated April 14, 1878,
Cezanne described the Mont Sainte-Victoire
as seen from a speeding train
as “quel beau motif (what beautiful motif).”
In short, Cezanne gradually wanted to realize
the transformation of visual perception induced by the steam railway
as one of his famous “sensations.”

Paul Cezanne The Ferry at Bonnieres (Summer 1866)

The Ferry at Bonnieres (Summer 1866) painted by Paul Cezanne
is the earliest railway painting among Impressionist painters.
